ER doctors sound alarm of bath salt use

Bath salt use produces psychotic effects

Bath salt use within the United States is rising as are both hospital admissions and deaths caused by an individual attempting to get a ‘legal high’.

However, if many in Washington get their way, bath salts will soon no longer be legal. And, for physicians who have first hand knowledge of their effects, the ban could not come soon enough.

“Bath salt use and abuse is rising to near-epidemic proportions,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “ER physicians are reporting extreme behaviors in those who have used bath salts, such as agitation, extreme violent reactions as well as severe psychotic tendencies, all of which are so bad that, in many instances, intervention from multiple professionals is needed to subdue the individual. It has also been reported that massive amounts of sedatives can’t even counter the effects of the bath salts. During the first six month of this year, poison control centers across the US received nearly 3,500 calls because of these drugs, whereas in previous years calls were nearly non-existent. So far, twenty-eight states have banned bath salts. It is evident that many in Congress see the importance of enacting legislation which will ban the sale and use of bath salts on a national level.”

Bath salts contain synthetic chemicals such as mephedrone and MDPV and produce a variety of symptoms, including violent behavior, death and homicidal as well as suicidal tendencies in users. One of the challenges facing lawmakers is the relative ease with which the chemical composition can be manipulated to make the new substance legally acceptable once again.

While bath salts use and abuse mainly affects teens and young adults, its use is now reaching even those who are middle aged.
