One or more powerful explosions ripped through the central part of Oslo, Norway Friday, leaving at least 7 people dead and 15 others injured. The blast occurred near government offices, including the Oil Ministry, the parliament building and the offices of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Norway’s secretary of state, Hans Kristian Amundsen, confirmed Stoltenberg was not in his office at the time of the explosion and is safe.
Oslo police released a statement confirming “one or several explosions” occurred, but said they “cannot say anything about the scope of the damage.” “We don't know if this comes from a terrorist action; we don't know yet. We don't know exactly how many explosions (there) were yet. Oslo center has been evacuated,” an Oslo police spokesman told CNN.
Police are focusing on helping people who may be trapped inside damaged buildings. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosions, and authorities have refused to comment on speculation that al Qaeda may be responsible.
