ACC Men’s Basketball Conference Tournament Round 1 Schedule: Maryland and Boston College Fighting for NCAA Berth

The ACC men’s basketball conference tournament begins on Thursday and there is no shortage of teams fighting for the NCAA tournament lives. Maryland, Boston College and Miami are all on the bubble and will need impressive runs in the ACC tournament to get over the hump.

In game one of the ACC tournament the Miami Hurricanes (18-11, 7-9) will be facing the Virginia Tech Hokies (17-13, 7-9) at 12:00 p.m. ET. Miami is in desperate need of a deep run and they need to figure out how to get past a Virginia Tech squad that beat them in overtime in their only regular season match-up. Miami has knocked off Wake Forest and played UNC and Duke close but a loss on Thursday would likely send them to the NIT.

The Clemson Tigers (23-7, 9-7) are a lock to get into the NCAA tournament but could bolster their seeding with a strong showing in the ACC tournament and they’ll get started with an opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-18, 2-14) at 2:30 p.m. ET. Clemson opened the season 16-0 before dropping a pair of ACC   games to UNC and Wake. The Tigers do own a pair of wins over the Yellow Jackets, a squad that has put together one of their worst seasons in recent memory.

Game three is another must-win situation as the Maryland Terrapins (18-12, 7-9) are fighting for their NCAA tournament life when they face the North Carolina Sate Wolfpack (16-13, 6-10) at 7:00 p.m. ET. After opening the season at 11-2 the Terrapins have struggled with consistency and while they have wins over Michigan State and UNC to their credit they have plenty of ugly losses that are hard to explain.

Day one of the ACC tournament will wrap up with the Boston College Eagles (21-10, 9-7) facing the Virginia Cavaliers (10-17, 4-12) at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Eagles are a strong candidate for an NCAA berth with wins over Providence, UNC, FSU and Duke but they don’t want to leave anything to chance and will certainly be looking to knock off the Cavaliers for the second time this year.
