The
SEC basketball tournament kicks off on Thursday and several schools are facing
must-win games as their hopes of an NCAA tournament berth rest on an impressive
showing in the conference finale.
Action
will start at 1:00 p.m. ET when the Kentucky Wildcats (19-12, 8-8) take on the Mississippi
Rebels (16-14, 7-9) in an absolute must-win game. The Wildcats had several
opportunities to seal an NCAA berth late in the year but losing five of their last
six games has put them on the outside looking in at the moment. In their only
match-up during the regular season the Rebels beat the Wildcats in overtime.
The
Mississippi State Bulldogs (19-12, 9-7) take the court in the SEC conference
tournament for game two when they face the Georgia Bulldogs (12-19, 3-13) at
3:15 p.m. ET. Mississippi State would likely need at least a finals appearance
to even be considered for an NCAA tournament berth after a rough stretch towards
the need of the year in which they dropped five of six. Mississippi State beat
Georgia 67-61 in their only meeting this year.
Game
three of the SEC conference tournament will feature another bubble team as the Vanderbilt
Commodores (19-11, 8-8) face the Alabama Crimson Tide (17-13, 7-9) at 7:30 p.m.
ET. Vandy has had some impressive wins over Auburn and LSU but they have had
their share of ugly losses that have left them in desperate need of a deep run
in the SEC tourney. In their only game against the Crimson Tide the Commodores
earned a 79-74 win.
The
Florida Gators (22-9, 9-7) begin their SEC tournament with a showdown against the
Arkansas Razorbacks (14-15, 2-14) at 9:45 p.m. ET. Florida was on track to be a
lock for an NCAA berth but three straight losses to LSU, Tennessee and Miss.
St. has left them in real need of a few wins in the conference tournament.
Florida beat Arkansas by 15 points in their only match-up this year.
