Earl
Clark scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 7 assists while
Samardo Samuels added 22 points, 7 boards and 5 dimes as the Louisville
Cardinals opened their Big East conference tournament with a 73-55 blasting of
the Providence Friars on Thursday.
Louisville
quickly jumped to a 17-7 advantage in the opening minutes of the first half but
Providence had a golden opportunity to climb back into the game as the Cardinals
went on a four-minute scoreless streak. Unfortunately for the Friars they
managed just three points over that span and then the Cardinals went on a 9-0
run to move in front 26-10 before settling with a 34-25 lead at the break.
Providence
managed to close to within 38-33 after a pair of buckets from Jonathan Kale but
Louisville kept them at bay and then used an 8- run to move up by 14 midway
through the half and the Friars never had an answer.
The
Friars were done in by 26 turnovers in the game and 33 percent shooting from the
floor, including a dismal 2-17 from
beyond the three-point line.
