After
posting a dismal 2-14 record in ACC play the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets needed
a miracle to stage any sort of run in the conference tournament and on Thursday
they got their start as they stunned the Clemson Tigers 86-81 to advance to the
second round.
The
Yellow Jackets were led by Lewis Clinch who finished with 32 points and 6
rebounds and Gani Lawal who added 20 points and 14 rebounds.
After
Tech jumped to a 16-9 lead to start the game Clemson settled down and chipped
away at the deficit, eventually taking the lead and building a 24-19 lead of their
own. Tech remained calm and composed and didn’t let the game get away and
managed to even the score 39-39 at the break.
Georgia
Tech then opened the second half with an 8-0 run but once again Clemson clawed their
way back and cut their deficit to 54-53 with 11:53 left in the game. Tech then
went on a 13-2 sprint that gave them a 67-55 cushion with 8:41 left.
It
took a major effort but Clemson once again fought its way back and when Terrence
Oglesby buried a three-pointer with 1:11 on the clock the Tigers were within
79-75. Clinch then completed a huge three-point play that was once again
answered by an Oglesby triple. Clemson then had a golden opportunity to cut their
deficit to two but Trevor Booker missed a pair of free-throws and with 12
second left on the clock Iman Shumpert sealed the game for Tech with a pair
from the charity stripe.
