A
large crowd of Israeli protesters have rallied in Jerusalem, calling for the government
to step up their efforts in securing the release of captured soldier Gilad
Shalit.
Shalit
was captured by Palestinian militants in 2006 and since that time the Israeli
government has been trying to gain his freedom through a prisoner swap with
Hamas. That agreement has been difficult to broker as Hamas has demanded the
release of several hundred prisoners for Shalit’s freedom.
Outgoing
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert had pledged to secure Shalit’s release but has been
unable to do so up to this point and protesters have been pushing for him to do
more. On Friday those protesters blocked the road leading to Olmert’s
residence, chanting “Olmert, you made a promise, Olmert, keep it.”
Those
trying to secure the release of Shalit, including his parents, fear that when
Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu takes office their efforts will
become more difficult due to his hard-line stance against Hamas.
Shalit
was last heard from in June 2008 when a letter was received in his hand
writing.
