The
opening day of the ACC tournament provided a huge upset as well as kept the dreams
of an NCAA tournament berth alive for others but Friday will certainly favor
the big dogs of the conference as North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest and Florida
State take to the court for the first time.
In
the opening game the North Carolina Tar Heels (27-3, 13-3) will take on the
Virginia Tech Hokies (18-13, 7-9) at 12:00 p.m. ET. The Tar Heels are looking
to lock up a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament and with an ACC conference title
they could earn the #1 overall seed following the losses suffered by UConn and
Pittsburgh on Thursday. The Hokies need a win just to keep their NCAA
tournament hopes afloat but they gained some confidence on Thursday after
blasting Miami in their opener. In their only match-up this year the Tar Heels
beat the Hokies 86-78.
The
Florida State Seminoles (23-8, 10-6) will play their first game of the ACC
tournament at 2:30 p.m. ET when they face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
(12-18, 2-14). FSU has already punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament but
will be looking to boost their seeding while Georgia Tech would need a
conference tournament championship to get in. The yellow Jackets scored the upset
of the day on Thursday when they stunned the Clemson Tigers. FSU beat Georgia
Tech 62-58 in their only meeting this year.
Game
three of the ACC tournament on Friday will feature the Wake Forest Demon
Deacons (24-5, 11-5) and the Maryland Terrapins (19-12, 7-9) with tip-off at
7:00 p.m. ET. Wake could easily secure a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament if they
reach the tournament finals but they are playing a determined Maryland squad
that needs another win to boost their hopes of an NCAA tournament bid. The two
teams met just ten days ago with Wake winning 65-63.
The
ACC conference tournament will wrap up action on Friday with the Duke Blue
Devils (25-6, 11-5) taking on the Boston College Eagles (22-10, 9-7) with
serious implications for both teams. The Blue Devils could snag a #1 seed in the
NCAA tournament if they were to win the conference tournament while the Eagles
are in desperate need of a win to move from the bubble to an NCAA berth. Boston
College knocked off the Blue Devils in their only meeting this year.
