Big Ten Men’s Basketball Conference Tournament Round 2 Schedule: Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan Fight to Keep Bubble from Bursting

With no big surprises in day one of the Big Ten conference tournament day two promises to be full of action as Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan continue to battle for a bid to the NCAA tournament while Michigan State looks to lock up a high seed and Ohio State and Wisconsin face a potential play-in game.

The action starts at 12:00 p.m. ET as the Michigan State Spartans (25-5, 15-3) take on the Minnesota Gophers (22-9, 9-9). The Spartans have an outside shot at earning a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament if they can take the Big Ten championship but they will be facing a desperate Gophers squad that is in need of a quality win to attract a bid for the NCAA tournament. Michigan State has beaten Minnesota twice this year, the last time a 76-47 blasting.

In what could be a play-in game for the NCAA tournament the Ohio State Buckeyes (20-9, 10-8) will face off against the Wisconsin Badgers (19-11, 10-8) at 2:30 p.m. ET. Many feel that Ohio State lacks the quality wins to grab an at-large bid with their biggest win against a non-conference opponent being Butler and went 1-6 against the top three schools in the Big Ten. Wisconsin is in a similar boat as they endured a six-game losing streak in conference play but they do own a win over Ohio State this year.

Game three will have the Illinois Fighting Illini (23-8, 11-7) taking on the Michigan Wolverines (20-12, 9-9) at 6:30 p.m. ET. Illinois is almost certainly heading to the NCAA tournament and a win would only help them gain a more favorable seeding while Michigan is in need of a win as they sit on the bubble. The Wolverines do have out of conference wins over Duke and UCLA but a rough run in the Big Ten could cost them. Illinois and Michigan split their two games earlier this year but haven’t played each other since Jan. 14.

The Big Ten will wrap up action on Friday with a 9:00 p.m. ET showdown against the Purdue Boilermakers (22-9, 11-7) and the Penn State Nittany Lions (22-10, 10-8). Purdue has their ticket to the NCAA tournament punched but Penn State may still have some work to do, making the nightcap an interesting game. The two teams split their games earlier this year.
