Tyler
Hansbrough scored 28 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Wayne Ellington added 16
points and dished out 4 assists and Deon Thompson finished with 12 points and 7
boards as the North Carolina Tar Heels escaped with a 79-76 victory over the Virginia
Tech Hokies on Friday.
Virginia
Tech jumped to an early 11-4 advantage in the opening frame and managed to push
their lead to 26-17 after Jeff Allen completed a three-point play with 6:45
left in the half but the Tar Heels wouldn’t let the game slip away and when
Ellington buried a three-pointer to cap a 17-8 run the game was tied 34-34. The
Hokies held a 42-41 lead just before the end of the half but the Tar Heels went
into the break with a 43-42 advantage after Tyler Zeller hit a layup in the closing
seconds.
The
two teams traded leads for opening ten minutes of the second half but Virginia
Tech managed to open a 66-60 lead as A.D. Vassallo buried a pair of
three-pointers. Once again the Tar Heels just stayed close and Hansbrough
managed to knot the game up at 69-69 on a jumper with 6:13 left in the game.
Hansbrough finally put UNC in front 75-74 when he sank a pair of free-throws with
1:13 on the clock. Vassallo put the Hokies back in front seconds later with a
layup but Hansbrough answered with a bucket with 34 seconds left. Virginia Tech
had a shot to take the lead but Hansbrough managed to tie up J.T. Thomspon and UNC
had the possession arrow in their favor. Hansbrough was then fouled on the in-bounds
pass and sank the two free-throws with 5 seconds left to seal the game.
