The
quarterfinals of the Big East conference tournament provided plenty of action
on Thursday as the #2 seeded Pittsburgh Panthers and #3 seeded UConn Huskies
were bounced out while Louisville and Villanova moved on to the semis. The
Panthers took a beating from West Virginia and may have seen a #1 seed in the NCAA
tournament slip away while the Huskies dropped a marathon 6-OT game to the Syracuse
Orange and could be in the same boat as Pittsburgh.
Nobody
benefited more from Thursday’s results than the Louisville Cardinals (26-5,
14-2) who now face the Villanova Wildcats (26-6, 13-5) at 7:00 p.m. ET on
Friday. The Cardinals crushed Providence to advance while the Wildcats needed a
last second bucket to get past Marquette. A conference championship for
Louisville could put them in the NCAA tournament as a #1 seed while Villanova
is pushing for a possible #2 seed. Louisville snuck past Villanova 61-60 in
their only match-up this year on Jan. 10.
In
the second semifinals game in the Big East conference tournament the Syracuse
Orange (25-8, 11-7) will be returning to the court to face the West Virginia
Mountaineers (23-10, 10-8) for a 9:00 p.m. ET showdown. The Orange are coming
off a dramatic victory over UConn that kept them on the floor for more than
four hours while the Mountaineers are back after a surprisingly easy win over
Pittsburgh. Both teams are solid locks for an NCAA tournament berth but now it’s
all about seeding. Syracuse knocked off West Virginia in their only match-up
this year.
