Medical Aid Workers Kidnapped in Darfur Reportedly Freed

The three medical aid workers who had been kidnapped in Sudan’s Darfur region on Wednesday have been freed by their captors according to a report made by Italy’s foreign ministry.

Sudanese government officials responded quickly to the kidnappings, saying they would locate the three aid workers who were staff members of the Medecins Sans Frontiers. On Friday the government announced they knew where the three were and had begun negotiating for their release.

Laura Archer, a Canadian nurse, Mauro D’Ascanio, an Italian doctor, and Raphael Monier, a French co-ordinator, were identified as the three staff members who were kidnapped at gunpoint after their office was raided by bandits.

The Belgian branch of the MSF responded to the kidnappings by moving their remaining staff to the capital. Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir had recently expelled the Dutch and French MSF chapters following his indictment by the International Criminal Court.

He stands accused of seven counts of war crimes as well as crimes against humanity.
