The
U.S. Justice Department has announced they would no longer be holding terror
suspects under the term “enemy combatant,” ending a policy implemented by
former President George W. Bush that enabled the U.S. to hold terror suspects
indefinitely and without trial.
As
a result of the decision the U.S. will now mirror their policy towards
detainees with legal standards that have been established by the international
laws of war.
That
shift now means that the U.S. will only detain those who have provided “substantial”
support to terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
According
to the Justice Department “The government's new standard relies on the
international laws of war to inform the scope of the president's authority
under this statute.”
