President Barack Obama Calls Food Safety System a “Public Health Hazard,” Names Margaret Hamburg as Head of FDA

President Barack Obama has called the U.S. food safety system a “public health hazard” after pointing to a series of scandals that has led to a number of outbreaks, the most recent being a salmonella outbreak caused by poor conditions at a peanut-butter processing plant in Georgia.

Obama also pointed to a contaminated spinach outbreak in 2006 during his weekly radio and video address as he called for an overhaul to the entire system that was designed to monitor and ensure the safety of food products in the United States.

The president blamed much of the failure on underfunding and understaffing in the Food and Drug Administration, a situation Obama called “a hazard to public health.”

After identifying the problems associated with the FDA Obama announced his appointment of New York Health Commissioner Margaret Hamburg as the new head of the government agency. Obama expressed confidence that the recent failures of the FDA would change under Hamburg’s leadership.

Hamburg’s appointment still needs the approval of the Senate but there is not expected to be many standing in her way to the post.
