SEC Conference Tournament Semifinals Scores: Mississippi State Shocks LSU to Advance to Finals

Jarvis Varnado scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Barry Stewart added 17 points and Phil Turner pulled down 11 rebounds as the Mississippi State Bulldogs stunned the LSU Tigers 67-57 on Saturday to advance to the finals of the SEC conference tournament finals.

The Bulldogs held a 31-29 lead heading into the second half and pushed their advantage to 34-29 before the Tigers used a 6-0 spurt to take a 35-34 lead. Mississippi State responded with six straight points of their own to move in front 40-35 advantage and pushed that lead to 47-39 on a dunk from Kodi Augustus and LSU couldn’t find an answer the rest of the way as they went nearly six minutes without a field goal, a stretch in which the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 14-2.

The game was there to be won be either team as they were equally awful from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 33 percent on the day but the Tigers managed to hit just 31 percent. Ultimately the game was decided by Mississippi State’s ability to get to the foul line as they shot 24-35 from the stripe compared to 9-13 for LSU.

With the win the Bulldogs may have done enough to lock up a ticket to the NCAA tournament but would earn an automatic bid with a win in the finals on Sunday.
