Mississippi State Bulldogs Punch Their Ticket to NCAA Tournament with SEC Conference Championship Win Over Tennessee Volunteers

Phil Turner scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Barry Stewart added 11 points and 8 boards and Jarvis Varnado chipped in 11 points with 7 rebounds and 6 blocked shots as the Mississippi State Bulldogs completed their dramatic run through the SEC conference tournament with a wild 64-61 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

In the closing seconds of the game the Volunteers had their chances to win or at least force overtime but a series of bazaar occurrences cost them those opportunities.

Standing at the foul-line with 11 seconds left and trailing by two J.P. Prince sank his first shot but after his second missed the mark Mississippi State knocked the ball out of bounds and Tennessee had the ball back with nine seconds left and trailing 62-61.

On the in-bounds pass Tennessee was then called for a five-second violation after they couldn’t get the ball in and Mississippi State took over. The Bulldogs then turned the ball over on their in-bounds and it looked like the Vols would have one last chance. They then turned the ball over a second time on an in-bounds pass and were forced to foul Stewart who hit a pair from the foul-line to push the Bulldogs lead to 64-61 with 8 seconds left in the game. Tennessee had one last shot at tying the game but Cameron Tatum’s three-pointer fell short and the Bulldogs celebrated.

Both teams struggled with their shooting as the Bulldogs hit 36 percent from the floor but the Volunteers were worse, hitting dismal 29 percent.
