Louisville Cardinals Snags #1 Overall Seed in NCAA Tournament; UNC, UConn and Pittsburgh Take Region Top Spots as Well

The Louisville Cardinals were rewarded for their Big East regular season and conference tournament titles as they were handed the #1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and will begin their dance in the Midwest Region with the winner of Tuesday’s match-up between Alabama State and Morehead State.

Louisville was one of three Big East teams to earn a number one seed in the NCAA tournament as the Pittsburgh Panthers and Connecticut Huskies were also placed atop regions. Pittsburgh will be playing out of the East Region while Connecticut heads up the West Region.

Many had the North Carolina Tar Heels as the overall #1 but a disappointing loss to FSU in the ACC conference tournament may have cost them. They’ll still be the #1 in the South Region and may have the easiest road to Detroit where the Final Four will be played.

Joining the Cardinals in the Midwest Region will be Michigan State at #2, Kansas at #3 and Wake Forest at #4. Perhaps the most controversial at-large bid went to the Arizona Wildcats who found their way into the dance with a #12 seed but they’ll e facing a tough Utah squad who comes in at #5 in the Midwest Region. Siena, which opens with Ohio State in the first round, is already considered the dark horse in the region.

Over in the East Region the Pittsburgh Panthers will be dealing with Duke at #2, Villanova at #3 and Xavier at #4. The difficulty of the East Region runs deep as the Florida State Seminoles sit at #5 while Oklahoma State and Tennessee carry #8 and #9 seeds. People are pointing to the potential of an opening round upset by #11 VCU who will be facing the #6 UCLA Bruins.

The Connecticut Huskies will be opening with Chattanooga in the West Region but there are plenty of teams that could come out of the region as the Memphis Tigers snagged a #2 seed while Missouri carries a #3 seed. Washington sits at #4 and a very dangerous Purdue is sitting at #5. After an impressive run in the ACC conference tournament the #10 Maryland Terrains may have the best chance at an upset as they face #7 California in their opener.

While the North Carolina Tar Heels may not have picked up the overall #1 seed they did appear to get the best region. If Ty Lawson is healthy the Tar Heels prospects of getting past #2 Oklahoma, #3 Syracuse and #4 Gonzaga look pretty good. Butler at #9 and LSU at #8 both paid for losses in the conference tournament and one of them will likely be facing the Tar Heels. Sitting at #12 Western Kentucky could the favorite for an upset as they drew Illinois in the first round and they have plenty of experience in the NCAA tournament.
