Pakistani Government to Reinstate Supreme Court Chief Justice

The Pakistani government has said it would reinstate Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry following the resignation of current Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on March 21.

Chaudhry was dismissed from his post in 2007 as part of former President Pervez Musharraf’s purge which saw another 60 judges dismissed. The controversial dismissals led to massive protests, many led by opposition leader Nawaz Sharif who called for their reinstatements.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani made the announcement regarding the move stating, “I announce the restoration of all deposed judges including Mr Iftikhar Chaudhry.” The announcement was met with jubilation among Chaudhry supporters who canceled a planned march on Islamabad.

Questions about how the reinstatement will affect President Asif Ali Zardari remain as he had been the subject of controversy prior to Chaudhry’s dismissal. Zardari, the widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, had been granted immunity by Musharraf which opened the door for his return to Pakistan. Chaudhry had challenged the amnesty on grounds that Musharraf’s own rule was illegal and Zardari may be guilty of corruption charges, charges he should be forced to face.
