For
the first time in nearly two decades El Salvador will no longer be headed by a
conservative as the recent presidential election placed leftist Mauricio Funes
of the FMLN party in office, ending an 18-year reign by the Arena party.
According
to the polls the FMLN captured 51.3 percent of the vote while Arena, headed by
Rodrigo Avila, held 48.7 percent.
The
FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front) formed after the end of a
brutal civil war between Marxist rebels and government forces. That civil war
ended in 1991 after a peace accord was brokered by the UN and the FMLN was
established.
In
the past every leader of the FMLN had been a participant in that war but Funes
marks a significant break in tradition as he was never a combatant.
Opponents
of the FMLN have warned that Funes will only lead El Salvador closer to the policies
of Venezuela and its leader Hugo Chavez, eventually establishing itself as a
satellite of the socialist country.
