UN Aid Workers Kidnapped in Somalia Reportedly Freed

The four UN aid workers who were kidnapped by gunmen earlier on Monday have reportedly been freed by their captors.

According to a spokesman for the Islamists al-Shabab militant group the aid workers were in the process of being handed over to the UN.

On Monday the workers were traveling towards an airstrip in Wajid, about 200 miles northwest of Mogadishu, when their vehicle was stopped by several gunmen. They were then forced from tehri vehicle and taken captive by the men.

Wajid is an established stronghold for al-Shabab and while there are a number of armed militias in the area many suspected al-Shabab of the kidnappings from the outset.
