Madagascar’s President Announces Plans to Resign, Hand Power to Military

The power struggle in Madagascar may be coming to an end as President Marc Ravalomanana has announced he will step down from office, essentially handing control to the military and more specifically opposition leader Andry Rajoelina.

Madagascar has been rocked by violence as the military, which backs Rajoelina, has taken up arms against Ravalomanana in what has been condemned by the African Union, calling the events an “attempted coup d’etat.” Tuesday’s announcement appears to support the idea that the “attempt” has become successful.

Ravalomanana had been elected to a second term in 2006 but resentment quickly followed as his policies brought little economic relief to the majority of the population. Rajoelina played on those frustrations and gained the support of the people as well as the majority, calling for the arrest of the president.

On Monday the military stormed the presidential palace and Rajoelina took up office while Ravalomanana remained at a palace on the outskirts of the capital city of Antananarivo. After announcing his resignation Ravalomanana reportedly left for an undisclosed location.

Rajoelina has pledged to draw up a new constitution and promised to hold elections within two years

More than 100 people have died in political fighting since the beginning of the year.
