France’s
President Nicolas Sarkozy is facing a vote of confidence regarding his decision
to return the country to NATO’s integrated military command, a move that has
angered many of his critics, some inside his own UMP party.
Despite
the critics claims that the move would tie France closer to the United States
most believe the confidence vote will favor Sarkozy as the UMP has a
significant majority in both houses of parliament.
France’s
relationship with NATO has been one of the most divisive topics among
politicians. Sarkozy has argued that France is already a significant
contributor to NATO and they have committed thousands of troops to operations headed
by the organization. The president said with so much committed to NATO it
wouldn’t make sense to have no say in the organization’s military strategy.
Sarkozy
announced last week that he wanted France to rejoin NATO’s military command.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon is to address the National Assembly on Tuesday
and a dbate will follow before a no-confidence vote is held in the evening.
