With
the NCAA tournament going into full swing on Thursday the West Region will have
a full slate of games, placing twelve of their 16 teams on the court including the
#1 Connecticut Huskies and the #2 Memphis Tigers.
Memphis
(31-3) will actually be starting the action in the West Region as they face the
#15 Cal State Northridge Matadors (17-13) at 12:25 p.m. ET in Kansas City, MO.
Many thought the Tigers may have been a #1 seed after another perfect season in
Conference USA and 25 straight wins, the last time Memphis lost was Dec. 20. It
will be a tall order for the Matadors who won the Big West regular season and
conference tournament titles after starting the season 1-6.
Just
minutes after Memphis gets under way the #8 Brigham Young Cougars (25-7) will face
the Texas A&M Aggies (23-9) at 12:30 p.m. ET from Philadelphia, PA. The Cougars
opened the year with ten straight wins and then won ten of eleven before
falling in the MWC conference tournament. The Aggies managed to bounce back
from a 2-6 stretch late in the year to win six xtraight before falling in the Big
12 conference tournament to Texas Tech.
Tipping
off at 2:30 p.m. ET from Portland, OR will be the #5 Purdue Boilermakers (25-9)
and the #12 Northern Iowa Panthers (23-10). Purdue won the Big Ten conference
tournament title and appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. As
for the Panthers an MVC conference tournament title gave them the automatic
bid. After dropping four of five the Panthers have won their last five.
In
game FOUR of West Region action the #7 California Golden Bears (22-10) will
face the #10 Maryland Terrapins (20-13) at 2:55 p.m. ET in Kansas City, MO. The
Bears have dropped three of their last four games including a first road loss
in the Pac-10 conference tournament. The Terrapins made their way into the dance
despite going 7-8 over their final 17 games.
#1
seed UConn (27-4) will get their NCAA tournament under way with a 3:00 p.m. ET
game against the #16 Chattanooga Mocs (18-16) in Philadelphia, PA. Connecticut
has gone 3-3 over their last six games after winning 13 straight and remain questionable
after losing Jerome Dyson for the year. The Mocs managed to win the Southern
conference tournament to earn their NCAA bid but they have done little this
year to even entertain a thought of upsetting the Huskies.
The
final game of West Region action for Thursday will feature the #4 Washington
Huskies (25-8) and the Mississippi State Bulldogs (23-12) at 5:00 p.m. ET in
Portland, OR. The Huskies won the Pac-10 regular season title but were upset in
the conference tournament after winning six straight and nine out of ten. The
Bulldogs won the SEC conference tournament to get their automatic bid to the dance
and have won six straight after dropping five of six.
