Nicolas
Sarkozy won a major battle in the French parliament on Tuesday when the
national assembly voted 239 to 238 to back his decision to rejoin NATO’s
military command.
Those
who had opposed the decision claimed that a closer relationship with NATO would
only weaken France’s independence from the United States yet Sarkozy argued
that France already invests heavily in the organization and to not have a voice
in its military strategy wouldn’t make sense.
France
removed itself from NATO’s military command in 1966 when President Charles de
Gaulle made the controversial decision.
France
and Germany are due to host NATO’s 60th anniversary summit in Strasbourg
next month.
