Definition of intervention
An intervention, whether it is for traumatic events, serious problems, or addictions, is an orchestrated attempt wherein family members, fellow employees, friends, and loved ones confront the individual in an attempt to get them professional help. The ultimate goal is to see that the individual comes to grips with the reality of their situation so that they get help immediately. The terminology is most commonly used when drug abuse or substance dependency is the main issue.
The intervention is usually conducted under the supervision of an interventionist tries to convince the individual of the emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual damage they are doing to themselves especially when it involves substance dependency. The best case scenario is that the person enters an addiction treatment and recovery center to get help so that they overcome their dependency and return to living a substance-free life. Like any other potentially dangerous situation, fatalities are not uncommon with drug addiction.
Although family members, fellow co-workers, friends, and loved ones can try to do the intervention themselves it is not advisable and it is recommended that an interventionist supervise the drug rehab intervention. Even though interventions that are unsupervised occasionally work, there is a greater chance of success if a licensed, qualified interventionist conducts the event. Remember, they have been certified and at interventions and have the skills that the average individual does not.
Another benefit is that they can instruct the group members to remain calm, no matter how the addicted individual reacts to the drug rehab intervention. This also benefits the addicted individual as well as those other members in the group so that order is maintained and the risk of a violent outbreak or the individual walking out and refusing to get help doesn’t happen. Interventions are meant to be proactive, not reactive. Otherwise it may be unsuccessful and the individual will continue to use drugs.
