California Border Patrol stops big methamphetamine shipment

This week, agents from the U.S. Border Patrol stopped two sets of drug smugglers who were destined for Southern California with over a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of cocaine and methamphetamine.

A female U.S. citizen accompanied by a 22-year-old Mexican passenger was directed to a secondary inspection station after appearing suspicious. A K-9 team investigated and found drugs in the rear of the car. The Customs press release stated that inside a hidden compartment in the car’s rear bumper, agents found over 20 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value over two hundred thousand dollars.

Within the week, border officials accosted another U.S. citizen, a 19-year-old man who was attempting to smuggle over five pounds of methamphetamine through the border. The drugs had a street value over one hundred thousand dollars.

According to the San Diego Border Patrol’s statistics, they have seized over sixty-five thousand pounds of drugs in the past year. Of this, however, the great majority has been marijuana, with over one thousand pounds of cocaine and over three hundred pounds of methamphetamine also in the mix.

Part of California’s drug problem is the constant influx of drugs through the border from Mexico. For every one smuggler who is stopped, there are many more who make it through untouched. Unfortunately, enforcement alone won’t be enough to stop crystal meth abuse in California. What is needed are more effective crystal meth rehabs.

Crystal meth is actually one of the hardest drugs to quit. Typically, drug abuse rehab programs have a success rate of less than 10% when dealing with crystal meth addicts. It doesn’t have to be this way, however.
