Nadya Suleman was able to bring home two of her eight
babies Tuesday. Kaiser Permanante Medical Center in Bellflower, California
released sons Noah and Isaiah from the neonatal intensive care unit after
determining that Suleman’s new home was safe for the babies.
“This is a happy moment for everyone – the family,
physicians, nurses and entire NICU staff,” Dr. Mandhir Gupta said of the
infants’ release. “It is always rewarding whenever a premature infant goes home
as a healthy baby.”
“After several home visits Kaiser Permanente determined
that Ms. Suleman has safe housing, sufficient child care support and the
supplies and equipment needed to care for the first two octuplets,” says a
hospital statement. “The remaining six babies continue to progress well and
remain at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center. All continue gaining
weight and remain on either formula or donated pasteurized breast milk.”
Suleman, who has six older children, gave birth to the couplets
in January. She has accepted help from the non-profit group Angels in Waiting,
who have given Suleman two pediatric nurses to help with the babies. Two
nannies were also hired to help look after the family of 14.
“I’m anxious, but I’m ready. I’m excited to start getting
all my family under one roof so I can get on with being a mother,” Suleman told
People magazine.
Kaiser Permanente expects to release two more infants
next week.
