What is Vicodin addiction?
Vicodin is a combination of two distinct analgesics or pain relievers – acetaminophen and hydrocodone. The former is better known by its trade name Tylenol while the latter is a synthetic codeine. Vicodin is now the most widely prescribed painkiller medication in the US. Unfortunately, it is also the most widely abused and highly addictive. In fact, the DEA has included the drug in its group of illegally trafficked prescription medications that are one of the 6 primary drug threats in the US today.
Because of the drug’s ability to quickly build up a tolerance for it, increasing doses of it are taken in order to achieve the desired effect or “high” that the user is accustomed to experiencing when they take it. Addiction results and in many instances, it becomes so severe that the individual needs to enter a Vicodin drug rehab program in order to be treated for and recover from their addiction to the medication. Additionally, many health and medical professionals now consider Vicodin as a serious public health threat.
The warning signs of Vicodin addiction
Due to the fact that the user builds up a tolerance to Vicodin very quickly, the drug exhibits a high degree of both emotional and physiological dependence. The addiction occurs very subtly so usually, when the individual comes to the realization that they are abusing the drug, they may already need to enter a Vicodin drug rehab program. Here are some warning signs to be aware of and which indicate that an addiction exists:
- committing deviant or illegal acts in order to get a prescription such as trying to obtain it from different doctors or just purchasing it on the street
- feeling physically ill you either run out of or stop taking the drug
- feelings of guilt or shame because of your use of the drug
- hearing from your family, friends, or loved ones that they have a concern about your use of the drug
- needing more pills in order to achieve the desired effect or taking larger quantities than what was originally prescribed
If any of these hold true for you or a loved one, you may want to consider entering a Vicodin drug rehab program for treatment.
