NIDA announces dates for National Drug Facts Week

National Drug Facts Week announced

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently announced the 2011 dates for National Drug Facts week as October 31 – November 6, 2011.

Every year, NIDA designates a week to focus on the effects of drug use and to shatter the myths surrounding drug abuse. It encourages schools around the country to get involved in educating its students about these myths to try and help decrease drug and alcohol abuse.

“National Drug Facts Week plays an important part in educating young people of the dangers of dug and alcohol use,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Setting aside a specific week within the school year to focus on America’s drug epidemic also helps parents to open up a dialogue in the home about the importance of not participating in any type of drug experimentation or underage drinking. After all, education is the foundation of drug abuse prevention.”

NIDA reports that daily marijuana use increased from 2009 to 2010 among 8th, 10th and 12th graders. After several years of decline, NIDA now reports an increase in the use of Ecstasy among 8th and 10th graders.
