In
an attempt to avoid a defeat in a parliamentary vote the Czech government has
opted to withdraw treaties committing the country to the U.S. missile defense
shield which would place a radar station on Czech soil.
While
the treaties had already passed the Senate they still needed to make their way
through the lower house for them to take effect. There was no guarantee that
would happen though as several parliamentary members who support the treaties
have been out sick, leading to the government’s decision to withdraw.
That
move is expected to be temporary as Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek stated, “This
does not mean we are giving up on the ratification process. We can return this
material to the lower house at any time.”
Topolanek
is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama next week in Prague and the
two will likely discuss the missile defense shield. Obama has not been as
committed to the missile defense shield as his predecessor George W. Bush and
has said the U.S. would assess the cost as well as the practicality before moving
forward.
