NCAA Tournament East Region Schedule Friday, March 20: Pittsburgh Panthers Begin Quest for First National Championship

The NCAA tournament goes into its second day of first-round action on Friday and the East Region will put their #1 seed in action as the Pittsburgh Panthers see action for the first time while the Xavier Musketeers and the FSU Seminoles also take to the court.

In the East Region’s first game on Friday the #8 Oklahoma State Cowboys (22-11) will take on the #9 Tennessee Volunteers (21-12) at 12:25 p.m. ET in Dayton, OH. The Cowboys went 1-3 against teams outside their conference that made the NCAA tournament, their only win coming against Siena while they fell to Gonzaga, Michigan State and Washington. Tennessee also scored an out-of-conference win over Siena as well as Marquette and Chattanooga but lost twice to Gonzaga, Kansas and Temple.

Game two of East Region action on Friday will feature the #1 Pittsburgh Panthers (28-4) and the #16 East Tennessee State Buccaneers (23-10) at 2:55 p.m. ET in Dayton, OH. The Panthers spent time as the #1 team in the country and started the season 16-0 and didn’t lose a game out of conference and beat seven teams that will be playing in the tournament. The Buccaneers will have their work cut out for them as they didn’t collect a single win against a tournament team but won the A-Sun conference tournament title t get their bid.

The #4 Xavier Musketeers (25-7) will get their NCAA tournament started with a showdown against the #13 Portland State Vikings (23-9) at 7:25 p.m. ET in Boise, ID. Xavier had an impressive run through the regular season with wins over Memphis, Missouri, LSU and Auburn and are a favorite to make a deep run. For Portland State it took a Big Sky conference tournament title to get into the NCAA tournament but they did score an impressive road win over Gonzaga in the regular season.

The East Region round one games will wrap up with the #5 Florida State Seminoles (25-9) facing the #12 Wisconsin Badgers (19-12) at 9;55 p.m. ET in Boise, ID. FSU is another team that many are picking to make a run as they fought their way through the ACC regular season with wins over North Carolina, Maryland and Clemson and then had an impressive run in the conference tournament before falling to Duke in the championship. Wisconsin is one of the more controversial selections for the NCAA tournament as they lost their big out of conference games to UConn, Marquette and Texas.
