After nearly 32 years on the run, convicted killer Mark Barrett was captured by U.S. Marshals Wednesday morning at his cabin in Colorado. Barrett was serving a life sentence for the murder Carl Ardolino when he escaped the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida during a power outage on August 17, 1979. His trail went cold for many years, but authorities began picking up leads and tips after re-launching an investigation in to his whereabouts in 2009. Barrett was featured on America’s Most Wanted in January 2010.
Tips eventually led U.S. Marshals to Barrett’s cabin outside Montrose. Officers disguised at fire protection officials visited the cabin Wednesday and identified Barrett by a tattoo on his arm. Barrett was arrested immediately. A search of his cabin uncovered a small marijuana growing operation and numerous firearms.
In addition to prison escape charges in Florida, Barrett faces drug and weapons charges in Colorado. Barrett, 60, is currently awaiting extradition to Florida at the Montrose County Sheriff's Office.
