Josef Fritzl Found Guilty of All Charges, Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who stood accused of enslaving his daughter in a cellar for more than two decades and fathering seven children with her has been convicted on all charges and sentenced to life in jail.

Fritzl, 73, originally pled not guilty to charges of murder and enslavement but later changed his plea after his daughter’s testimony. That murder charge was tied to the death of one of the children he fathered who, prosecutors argued, would have survived had Fritzl not neglected to seek medical help.

Following the sentence Fritzl’s lawyer told those outside the court, “He showed in his confession that he realizes the dimension of his crimes and offences and as such the verdict is the logical consequence.”

The court has ordered that Fritzl serve his sentence in a secure psychiatric facility.
