Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav Formally Charged with Rape

An indictment has been filed in a Tel Aviv court that formally charges former Israeli President Moshe Katsav with rape and other sexual offenses.

The charges came after several women who worked for Katsav while he was tourism minister and president alleged that the 63-year-old had committed a number of offenses including rape and sexual harassment.

Katsav has denied the accusations despite an agreement to a plea deal in June 2007 in which he was prepared to admit sexual misconduct. The former president eventually pulled his plea deal off the table in April 2008 saying he wanted to prove his innocence.

Shortly after learning about the indictment Katsav held a news conference in which he stated, “I have been humiliated, crushed, knocked down, and I suffer. But I am determined to fight to ensure that the truth emerges, all the truth, because I am innocent.”

There has been no date set for trial but Katsav is facing a sentence of up to 16 years if convicted of the rape charges.
