For
the second time this year hundreds of thousands of French workers have rallied
to protest against the government’s handling of the current economic crisis and
rising unemployment that has afflicted the country.
The
protests, organized by French unions, have led to a nationwide strike that has
produced rallies in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and more than 200 towns across the country.
Unions have expressed outrage over President Nicolas Sarkozy’s policies which they
say have produced little relief as more than two million people are now out of
work.
As
a result of the strikes France has experienced major disruptions in transportation
as well as seen schools closed while private-sector companies have been
operating with a depleted workforce as many employees have joined the rallies
against Sarkozy.
Much
of the ire directed at Sarkozy has concentrated on his plans to cut public
sector jobs as well as his unwillingness to increase minimum wage.
