Roburt
Sallie scored 35 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, Antonio Anderson finished with
13 points and 10 boards and Tyreke Evans added 15 points as the #2 Memphis
Tigers survived a first-round scare from the #15 Cal State Northridge Matadors 81-70
to advance in the West Region.
After
falling behind 11-4 in the opening minutes of the first half the Tigers appeared
to settle down and eventually built a 33-27 advantage before the Matadors
closed to within 34-31 at the half. Memphis continued to lead in the second half
but couldn’t shake Cal State and when the Matadors went on a 12-3 run they
grabbed a 46-43 lead with 13:22 left in the game.
The
Matadors hung on to their lead for the next six minutes but Antonio Anderson
hit a jumper for the Tigers at the 6:53 mark to put Memphis in front 64-63 and
that jumper was part of a 9-0 run that Cal State couldn’t overcome.
Memphis
shot 49 percent from the floor including 39 percent from beyond the three-point
line but were an awful 12-21 from the free-throw line.
