#8 LSU Tigers Hold Off #9 Butler Bulldogs to Advance to Second Round of South Region

Marcus Thornton scored 30 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, Tasmin Mitchell added 14 points and 7 boards and Chris Johnson chipped in 12 points while pulling down 6 rebounds and blocking 4 shots as the #8 LSU Tigers held off the #9 Butler Bulldogs 75-71 in the first round of the South Region.

The Tigers started out hot, jumping to a 9-0 lead but a six-minute scoreless stretch gave the Bulldogs enough time to regroup and after Shelvin Mack buried a three-pointer Butler was within 22-18 with 5:14 left in the half. Marcus Thornton then took over as he ran off nine unanswered points for the Tigers to extend the lead up to 31-18 before Butler trimmed their deficit to 35-29 at the break.

LSU clung to their lead early in the second half but a dunk from Willie Veasley gave Butler their first lead of the game 42-41 and it looked like the Bulldogs had the momentum. The two teams then went back and forth until Terry Martin tipped in a miss to give the Tigers a 60-58 lead and then Thornton buried a triple to give LSU some breathing room. Butler was able to get as close as 64-61 with 15 seconds left in the game but Thornton sealed the game with a pair of free-throws.

LSU shot 42 percent from beyond the three-point line and 49 percent overall.
