Eighteen people died Friday in Afghanistan’s Helmand province when the bus they were traveling in hit an improvised explosive device. The death toll could rise as authorities have yet to establish the exact number of passengers inside the bus. Several reports suggest more than one person survived the explosion, but those reports have not been confirmed.
A spokesman for the governor of Helmand said the bus was en route from Nahr e Saraj district to Lashkar Gah when it hit the IED. The Taliban is believed to be responsible. The group frequently uses IEDs for attacks on Afghan and NATO troops. A NATO soldier was killed by an IED on Thursday in eastern Afghanistan. The soldier’s name and nationality have not been released.
