Israel’s
Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu has been granted a two-week
extension to form a new government after meeting with President Shimon Peres to
discuss the proposed make-up of his coalition.
Netanyahu
will now have until April 3 to form the new government or he may be forced to
form a coalition with a smaller group of hard-line, right-wing and religious
parties.
The
Likud party leader told Peres that he was still holding hope that he could
bring in the more centrist Kadima party to the coalition. Kadima actually held
a slight advantage in the Feb. 10 election but Peres said Netanyahu stood a
better chance at forming the new government.
Netanyahu’s
efforts to bring Kadima in to the coalition have been unsuccessful thus far as
their leader and Israel’s current Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has refused to compromise
her party’s position on Palestine. Kadima has been in favor of negotiations
with Palestinians while Likud as well as the hard-line parties favor a tougher
stance against Palestinians and more specifically Hamas.
Livni
would likely retain her position as Foreign Minister if Kadima were to join the
coalition yet she has pledged to provide a strong oppositional voice against the
coalition if it were made up of hard-line parties.
