African Union Suspends Madagascar Following “Military Coup”

The African Union has formally suspended Madagascar following recent activity in the country that resulted in the resignation of its president and the military takeover and subsequent appointment of the opposition leader as new president.

President Marc Ravalomanana resigned from office on Tuesday and according to Madagascar’s constitution the leadership should have turned over to the head of parliament’s upper house with elections to follow within two months. Instead, the army installed opposition leader Andry Rajoelina as the new president with a formal inauguration to be held on Saturday.

In addition to the African Union contesting the legality of the new power structure the United States and France have both condemned the “coup” and the U.S. has already begun to withhold some aid to the Indian Ocean island.

Addressing the decision to suspend Madagascar form the AU Burkina Faso’s Ambassador Bruno Nongoma Zidouemba stated, “The council is of the opinion that what occurred in Madagascar enters the definition of unconstitutional change of government. The council then decided to suspend the participation of Madagascar to the bodies and organs of the AU.’
