Obama Apologizes for Special Olympics Comment on “The Tonight Show”

President Barack Obama has apologized for a comment he made on Thursday night’s “The Tonight Show” after he was criticized for the offhanded remark following the airing.

Obama was speaking with “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno when the conversation turned to the President’s bowling ability. After revealing he had bowled a 129 Obama told Leno “it was like the Special Olympics or something.’’

While the comment drew laughter from the audience Obama took no chances as he reportedly called Special Olympics chairman Tim Shriver after the taping and apologized for the comment prior to the show’s broadcast.

Shriver told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that Obama “expressed his disappointment and he apologized in a way that was very moving. He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population.” He also said that Obama extended an invitation to Special Olympics athletes to visit the White House and play basketball or bowl.
