President Obama Apologized for Special Olympic Remark on Jay Leno

President Barack Obama has apologized for his remark about the Special Olympics during an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Obama’s remarks about his low bowling score being “like Special Olympics or something” had him apologizing to America.

Before the show even aired, Obama called Special Olympics chairman Tim Shriver from Air Force One.”He expressed his disappointment and apologized. He was very sincere,” Shriver said on Good Morning America Friday.

The White House issued a statement Friday saying Obama “in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics.”

“The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world,” said spokesman Bill Burton.

He adds that “words hurt and words do matter, and these words that in some respect can be seen as humiliating…do cause pain.” Burton said he hopes Obama’s mistake will be a “teachable moment for our country.”
