Pennsylvania authorities have confirmed the death of
former Detroit Lions quarterback William “Jeff” Komlo, who has been on the run
from police since 2005 after failing to show for sentencing on DUI charges.
The State Department used fingerprints to confirm that
Komlo, 52, died in a car crash in Greece over the weekend. "Even though we
heard that he was deceased, the first reaction was that, well, we better make a
positive identification," said Chester County cheif detective Jim Vito. “As
far as we’re concerned, we’re closing this now.”
No details about the accident were released
Komlo played for the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons,
Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1979 to 1983. In 2005, he went missing after failing
to show for sentencing on two DUI convictions. He had also failed to show for
an unrelated hearing two months earlier. At the time of his disappearance,
Komlo was under investigation for fires at his home in Chester Springs and
another home in Florida.
