Lazar
Hayward scored 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Jerel McNeal added 14 points
and Wesley Matthews finished with 11 points and 8 boards as the #6 Marquette
Golden Eagles did just enough to hold off the #11 Utah State Aggies 58-57 on
Friday to advance to the second round of the West Region.
Hayward
scored Marquette’s first ten points to open a 10-5 lead and then the Golden
Eagles took advantage of a five-minute scoreless spell from the Aggies and went
on a 10-0 run to create a 23-9 cushion before Utah State managed to get within
26-18 at the break.
Marquette
pushed their advantage to 29-18 in the opening minute of the second half but
Utah State then went on a 10-0 run of their own to get within 29-28. The Golden
Eagles were able to extend their lead to 41-35 with just under ten minutes left
in the game but Utah State answered once again as they used a 14-2 run to grab
a 49-43 lead and looked to have complete control of the game with 4:43 left on the
clock.
The
Golden Eagles hit just two field goals the rest of the way but sank 11-14 from the
foul line to avoid the upset. Marquette managed to get to the foul-line 23
times compared to Utah State’s 8 attempts.
