A nine-month-old baby who had a rare metabolic disorder, brain damage and respiratory failure has died after doctors removed the boy from a ventilator that had kept him alive.
The doctors’ actions followed London’s High Court ruling that it had been in the best interest of the young boy to withdraw “life-sustaining treatment” despite appeals from the boy’s parents to keep him alive.
Doctors had argued that the life of “Baby OT” had been intolerable and that the humane act would be to let him die yet the parent’s insisted their son had experienced happiness and extended periods without pain.
On Thursday the High Court ruled the hospital could remove “Baby OT” from the ventilator and when the boy’s parents attempted to appeal the decision on Friday judges from the Court of Appeals refused permission.
