The South Region in the NCAA tournament returns to action on Saturday with three games and while the North Carolina Tar Heels, Oklahoma Sooners, Gonzaga Bulldogs and LSU Tigers are all expected participants the Michigan Wolverines and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers scored upsets to find their way to Saturday.
Action gets started with the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels taking on the #8 LSU Tigers in a game that promises to be physical. The Tar Heels pounded Radford in their opener and could get a huge second round boost if Ty Lawson returns to the court. LSU didn’t have the easiest time getting past Butler in the first round but their late defense proved to be enough to get to the second round. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. ET from Greensboro, N.C.
In game two of South Region action the #2 Oklahoma Sooners will be facing the #10 Michigan Wolverines. Blake Griffin was dominant in Oklahoma’s bruising of Morgan State in the opener and will almost certainly be the focus of the Wolverines on Saturday. A serious bubble team prior to the tournament selection the Wolverines proved they belonged by dropping Clemson in the first round. Tip-off is set for 5:50 p.m. ET from Kansas City, MO.
South Region action on Saturday will wrap up with the #4 Gonzaga Bulldogs facing the #12 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. After a sloppy start in their first game Gonzaga put things together in the second half to get past Akron while Western Kentucky scored the biggest upset of the South Region when they held off Illinois. Tip-off is set for 8:10 p.m. ET from Portland, OR.
