Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has announced his intentions to resign from his position as the country remains mired in an economic collapse, with many suggesting his economic and social reforms created the problem.
Gyurcsany told his Socialist party that he considered himself a hindrance to recovery and was quoted by Reuters saying, “I hear that I am the obstacle to the co-operation required for changes, for a stable governing majority and the responsible behavior of the opposition.” He continued, “I hope it is this way, that it is only me that is the obstacle, because if so, then I am eliminating this obstacle now.”
Hungary has experienced a string of riots rooted in the country’s economic problems and his tax hikes and spending cuts have further infuriated the public.
Gyurcsany is expected to notify parliament of his plans to resign on Monday.
