NCAA Tournament South Region Scores: #1 North Carolina Tar Heels Back into Sweet 16 After Holding Off #8 LSU Tigers

Ty Lawson scored 23 points and dished out 6 assists in his return to the court, Wayne Ellington added 23 points and Tyler Hansbrough finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds as the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels held off a tough #8 LSU Tigers 84-70 in South Region action on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

The two teams played close for much of the first half but the Tar Heels gained some separation when they used an 8-0 run to open a 29-22 lead with 4:08 left in the half and then extended that lead to 38-29 at the break.

LSU came out in the second half firing as they used a 15-3 run to grab a 44-41 lead but Lawson stopped the bleeding with a triple. The Tigers continued to hit from the floor though and when Garrett Temple hit a three-pointer with 12:25 left in the game LSU held a 54-49 advantage. Once again the Tar Heels responded with an Ed Davis dunk and then Ellington hit a layup and a three-pointer and UNC was back in front.

After the Marcus Thornton hit a three-pointer at the 8:41 mark the Tigers were knotted up at 63-63 but LSU then went scoreless over the next five minutes while the Tar Heels put the game away with an 11-0 run that LSU could never overcome.

UNC shot 54 percent from the floor and hit 6-13 from beyond the three-point line. The Tar Heels also made it to the free-throw line 18 times compared to just six times for the Tigers.
