Three days after U.S. President Barack Obama released a video message to Iranian leaders and people calling for a “new beginning” in relations the political leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, praised Obama for his willingness to bring “new language” to discussions regarding the Middle East.
While not directly citing Obama’s video message Meshaal told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that “a new language towards the region is coming from President Obama.”
The U.S., along with the EU and UN, have refused to deal with Hamas until the Palestinian group formally recognizes Israel and rejects violence. Hamas and Israel have had a long history of conflict and just recently Israel launched air and ground strikes inside the Gaza Strip, a region that Hamas has controlled since 2007.
Hamas’s charter calls for the destruction of Israel and it has been that message that has left Western countries from meeting with the political wing of the military group.
Yet Meshaal appeared to interpret Obama’s recent message as a sign there could be a shift as he told the paper “The challenge for everybody is for this to be the prelude for a genuine change in US and European policies.”
