Three Oakland Police Officers Killed, Gunman Dead, Following California Shootout

Three California police officers were killed and another gravely wounded on Saturday after a man wanted for violating his parole opened fire on the men in two separate shootings.

Lovelle Mixon, 26, had been pulled over by two Oakland police officers in what was a routine traffic stop but he then opened fire on the pair, killing one and leaving the second severely injured before fleeing on foot.

A massive manhunt was launched and after police received a tip that Mixon was hiding in an apartment building a SWAT team was called in to clear and search the building. As SWAT members entered the building Mixon once again opened fire, killing two more officers before he was shot and killed himself.

All three officers killed were veterans of the force and have been identified as Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35. The fourth officer, John Hege, 41, remains hospitalized in grave condition with a brain injury.

The shootings marked the first time in the history of the Oakland Police Department that three officers had been killed in the line of duty in the same day.
